critical infrastructure

Critical Infrastructure is defined as the vast network of highways, connecting bridges, tunnels, railways, utilities, buildings, and other facilities that are necessary to maintain normalcy in daily life. Most aspects of our society rely on this infrastructure in some way, and it is important to understand where the critical facilities in your community are located, and how to maintain them in the event of a hazard or natural disaster. The following dashboard displays critical infrastructure and facilities in the KIPDA region. This data was retrieved from KYEM, Division of State Risk and Insurance, ESRI, Kentucky Infrastructure Authority (KIA), Kentucky Office of Geographic Information (OGI), Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KTC), HAZUS, SHELDUS, and Public Service Commission.

The interactive dashboard below helps locate critical infrastructure locations in the KIPDA region.

  • The map below displays critical infrastructure locations in the KIPDA region. The table contains the type, name, county, and service initiation date (if available).
  • To locate critical sites in your area, press the drop down menu for county and select your county. The map will then display only sites in your area. You can then filter further by type of infrastructure (ie: Police Station, Railway, Oil & Gas Pipeline, etc.), by pressing the drop-down menu for ‘Type’.
  • Zoom in or out using (+) or (-) buttons, located by hovering your mouse over the top left corner of the map, to focus in on your area.
  • OR click and drag the mouse across the map to create a box around your location, and the critical sites in your area will be highlighted – the table below will reflect these selections.
  • The table at the bottom of the dashboard reflects the locations of the selection chosen from the drop down menu. Use the scroll bar to navigate the table and its contents.
